You Don’t Have to Be Fully Ready to Start Writing Your Story

Woman planning to write her book.

There’s a particular ache that lives in the heart of so many aspiring authors—especially those called to memoir. It’s the ache of an unspoken truth, a story that’s been quietly waiting inside you.

Sometimes, it’s a passing thought—I should write this down. Other times, it’s a whisper you can’t quite name. A memory that resurfaces at night. A moment in time that still echoes.

But then life gets loud again. Days pass. Responsibilities pile up. And the story? It keeps waiting.

Here’s what we want you to know—what most in the publishing world don’t say nearly enough:

You don’t have to be fully ready to begin.

You don’t need a perfect outline, the right writing space, or a crystal-clear timeline. You only need the willingness to let the story come closer. To begin sensing its edges. To allow it to be felt.

That’s where the work of memoir often begins—not in structure, but in quiet presence.

At Soul Spark Publishing, we guide authors through this delicate beginning. With gentle questions, deep listening, and thoughtful conversation, we help you shape what you’re holding into something that can be shared.

You are not behind. You are not too late. You are simply in the tender pause before the page. And that’s a sacred place to be. Here's how to start writing a memoir when you’re not ready.

How to start writing a memoir when you’re not ready

✨ Not sure where to begin? Start here.

We’ve created a set of clarity questions to gently guide you toward the heart of your story—whether it’s deeply personal memoir or story-rich nonfiction shaped by lived wisdom.

These aren’t just prompts. They’re invitations.

💫 Memoir Clarity Questions

(For the person who feels the tug of a personal story, but isn’t sure where to begin)

  • If your story has been whispering to you, what do you think it’s trying to say?

  • Is there a moment, a chapter, or even a season of your life that you keep circling back to—because you know it changed you?

  • If your book began with a single, vivid memory… what comes to mind first?

  • What’s the emotional truth at the heart of what you want to share? Not just what happened, but what it meant.

  • What do you hope someone might feel less alone in or inspired to do, after reading your story?

  • Are there themes that seem to keep showing up in your life—grief, becoming, belonging, letting go?

  • What’s at stake for you in writing this story? And what might be at stake for the person who needs to read it?

🌿 Story-Driven Non-Fiction Clarity Questions

(For the person who’s holding wisdom or insight that’s been shaped by lived experience)

  • What do people often come to you for—comfort, clarity, guidance? And what do you find yourself saying to them over and over again?

  • If you had five minutes to share something that changed your life, what story would you tell?

  • What personal experience gave you the kind of insight that can’t be Googled or rushed?

  • What transformation have you lived through—that you now feel called to help others navigate?

  • When you talk about this topic, what stories do you naturally reach for to help people feel what you mean?

  • What’s a belief or truth you hold now, that you had to earn the hard way?

  • If your book could answer just one big question—for you and the reader—what would it be?

Whenever the moment feels right, we’re here to walk beside you—step by step. With clarity. With care. With reverence for the story only you can tell.
