It's Never Just About the Writing The Memoir Publishing Process: Writing, Design, and Reader Experience | Soul Spark Publishing

When people say they're 'writing a book,' they usually mean the manuscript—the words that will eventually become a book. But memoir publishing requires three elements working in harmony: the writing and structure, the design, and the reader experience.
Writing is just the beginning. Here's what else matters when publishing a memoir.
First, the writing. Without this, there's no book. But the writing isn't just words on a page or stories strung together. There needs to be intention, structure, and deep consideration. Through collaborative editing, we uncover the story beneath the story, then let the right structure emerge to tell it.
Once the manuscript is complete, the visuals come into play. This is the part most authors dream about for years. They create vision boards. They admire covers across genres. They imagine their book on bookshop shelves. When we reach this stage, we take all of that into consideration—and then expand on it. We look at the writing itself and decide how it should be presented. We consider what readers will expect based on the cover. We find ways to bring the author's voice and sensibility into the design. Every element is intentional: front cover, back cover, spine, interior formatting, chapter spreads—everything. The cover is the first impression, yes, but the beauty of a book comes from how the author's voice, the content, and the presentation work together.
The reader is the final element we spend considerable time thinking about. From the very beginning, we ask our authors to imagine their future readers and the experience they want to create. We ask them to visualize someone holding their book: Where are they sitting? Are they reading for hours or savouring one chapter at a time? What are they feeling while reading—and when they put the book down? When they recommend it to a friend, what will they say? Every question helps us structure, design, and present the book in a way that honours the reader's experience.
When these three elements come together in harmony, the result is stunning. The writing is paced so readers can sink into it and take what they need from it. The structure makes sense for both the content and the reader's journey. The design prepares readers for what's coming, invites them to keep opening the book, and shapes how they experience the words on each page—from line spacing to margins to font choice. Everything is done to create the experience we envisioned with the author from the very beginning.
It's never just about the writing. It starts there, but turning a completed manuscript into something readers can hold requires intentionality, thoughtful planning, and deep care for the reader experience.
